Psalm 46

Times of trouble challenge our systems of belief. Troubling times crash against our sensibilities like rain on a tin roof. The clamor and noise focus all of our attention on what is immediate. In the immediate we are dependent on something to anchor our hope. We learn from Psalm 46 that God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. In other words, he doesn’t hold his help at a distance. He doesn’t keep us far away. Instead, he is right beside us leading us with the power of his presence. The hope of God’s presence is our greatest hope

This Psalm is so familiar to many of us that we lose much of its meaning by forgetting every text has a context. The context of this text is the wedding song of Psalm 45. Psalm 46 gives us a glimpse into the dwelling place of God. We learn God is ever-present with his own and especially in times of need. This Psalms carries with it the often “already-not-yet” tension of Scripture. God is ever-present and one day the whole universe will be filled with the knowledge of him as the waters cover the sea. From Psalm 46 we both celebrate and long for God’s presence.

This Psalm shows us that at the end, God tears down in order to build back up. God responds to each of us individually in the same way he responds to the rest of the cosmos. In order for our souls to be lifted up we have to come to the end of ourselves, admitting we are a sinner and need a Savior. In order for our bodies to be lifted up they must first undergo the change of death. God tears down before he builds up.

Scripture then tells us to not be afraid. Scripture does not simply say, don’t be afraid. Instead, it more specifically says, therefore do not fear. The reason we do not fear is that we fear something greater – we fear God. The fear of God comforts us because it prepares us for anything. We realize that he who causes the trembling of the mountains is the one in whom we are invited to take our refuge. He will provide. He will protect. He will never leave nor forsake. He will deliver us from the afflictions all around us.

What seems like chaos all around us in reality reveals God is totally in control. Nothing takes him by surprise and he will cause all things to work together for good to those who take refuge in him.
