Look to the Stars

Look to the Stars

The stars are putting on a once-in-a-lifetime show this weekend, and I don’t want you to miss it. For the first time in decades, six planets—Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Uranus, and Neptune—will align in the evening sky on January 25 and 26, 2025. The beauty and rarity of this event have me thinking about the many times Scripture speaks of the stars—not as random lights, but as part of God’s grand design.

It’s moments like this that remind me: the same God who created the stars and set them in their places knows us by name and has a purpose for each of us. If you get the chance, step outside tonight and let the heavens remind you of His greatness and His love.

Let’s consider the stars together for a brief reflection. The Bible affirms that the stars are not random but divinely placed, serving as a powerful reminder of God’s sovereignty, His unfolding plan, and the eternal certainty He offers to those who love Jesus.

As we look to the stars, I offer three truths they proclaim:

1. God Put Them There: He is Sovereign

The stars remind us that God is the Creator and Sustainer of the universe. I love Genesis 1:16: “God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars.” God, in all His power, just flung the stars into the sky. Every single one reveals His infinite might and creativity. He not only created them but also ordered their movements to mark times and seasons (Genesis 1:14).

The same God who created and sustains the stars is sovereign over every detail of our lives. As Isaiah declares, “Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name, by the greatness of his might, and because he is strong in power not one is missing” (Isaiah 40:26). Just as no star is out of place, no moment in history or our lives is outside of His control. You can trust Him—His plans are good, and He is faithful to sustain you in every season.

2. God Has a Plan That Unfolds Regardless of the Times and Seasons

Throughout Scripture, the stars are not only a testament to God’s creative power but also a reminder of His unfolding plan. Whether it was the Star of Bethlehem guiding the wise men to the newborn King or the prophetic imagery of celestial signs in Joel and Revelation, the heavens remind us that God is working out His purposes.

Seasons change, alignments come and go, but God’s plan is unshakable. The stars declare that His purposes will stand, unaffected by human history or cosmic events. As Psalm 33:11 affirms, “The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of his heart to all generations.”

No matter how uncertain the world may feel, the alignment of God’s plan remains steady and sure. His ultimate purpose is to redeem and restore through Jesus Christ, and nothing—no alignment of stars, kingdoms, or circumstances in our lives—can alter it. You can rest knowing God has a plan and He is in control.

3. We Can Be Certain of the Forever He Has Prepared

The stars, as fixed as they seem, pale in comparison to the certainty of eternity. They may shift in the night sky, fade from view, or burn out entirely, but God’s promises remain forever. Jesus said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away” (Matthew 24:35).

For those who love and follow Jesus, the return of Christ and the eternal state He has promised are more certain than the stars themselves. Revelation 21:1-4 gives us a glimpse of this eternal future, where God will dwell with His people, wipe away every tear, and make all things new.

So while celestial events like planetary alignments might capture our attention for a moment, they point us to something far greater: the God who created the stars, sustains them, and has prepared an eternal home for those who trust in Him. The return of Christ is not a possibility—it is a certainty.

Look to the Stars and Remember His Love

During this celestial event over the next two weekends and any other time in the future, let the stars remind you of three unshakable truths: God is sovereign, His plan is unfolding, and eternity is certain for those who love Jesus. The same God who made the stars, who set the heavens in place, and who ordains times and seasons, knows you, loves you, and has prepared a place for you to be with Him forever.

As Psalm 8:3-4 says:

“When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?”

Yet, the One who formed the stars considers us. Through Jesus Christ, we have an answer to the question posed in Psalm 8. God cares for us infinitely and invites us into an eternity with Him. He calls us by name, invites us into His family, and promises that one day we will dwell with Him forever. It’s through the cross of Christ that this promise is made possible. So, look to the stars and marvel at the heavens, but let them point you to the Maker of the stars, the Savior of your soul, and the Lover of your life.
