Consider Jesus. He can never be accused of doing anything selfishly or from conceit, or prideful, or amazingly, as counting others more significant than himself. The God of the universe who spoke and there was can never be accused of counting others more significant than himself. No, he came to serve, not to be served. He came to give. He came with patience even as he interacted with those who sought his demise. Consider the way that he deals with us. He never grows weary of teaching us, of contending for us, of hearing our requests and petitions even when we ask amiss. He never grows weary of us coming to him over and over again. Consider how he never gave up on us and never will, even overcoming our resistance of him. Consider how faithful and just he is to forgive us of our sins and cleanse us as often as we ask.
We are able to know all these things about him because he chose to reveal himself to us in Jesus. There is no God behind the back of Jesus. What we know of God comes through our knowing Jesus and we know Jesus only through a Cross. He, without ceasing to be what he was (God), became what he was not (man). This incredible truth is intended to be the basis for all that we do as those who are known by him – Christian. All that we do is to seek to be conformed to his image. Our seeking is to have the mind of Christ, and our minds are to be set towards the one who was mindful of us. He is first in our minds because we were first in his. John reminds us, We love because he loves us first. (1 Jn 4:19)
